Episcopal Church History

The Shield of the Episcopal Church

The present shield of the Episcopal Church was adopted in 1940 and offers a brief lesson in this church's history.

The red cross on the white field is representative of the St. George's cross, an indication of the Episcopal Church's link to the Church of England - the mother church of the Anglican Communion.

The nine white crosses in the field blue represent the nine original diocese that met in Philadelphia in 1789 to write the constitution of what was then called the Protestant Episcopal Church in the USA.

The outline of the nine crosses are themselves in the shape of the Cross of St. Andrew, the patron of Scotland.  This shape pays tribute to the Scottish church's role in consecrating the first American bishop, Samuel Seabury of Connecticut, in 1784.

The colors: red, white, and blue, also reflect the role of the Episcopal Church as the branch of the Anglican Communion officially planted in the United States.
